Impressions

Impressions is an album of live and studio recordings by John Coltrane, released by Impulse! Records in July 1963. The material spans sessions recorded over roughly eighteen months. India and Impressions were taped live at the Village Vanguard in November 1961 during the residency that also produced Live at the Village Vanguard. Tracks Up 'gainst the wall and After the rain were recorded at Van Gelder Studio on September 18, 1962, and April 29, 1963. The live takes feature Coltrane’s classic quartet: McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums; Up 'gainst the wall was recorded in studio just in trio without McCoy Tyner. For the Village Vanguard performances, the group is joined by Eric Dolphy and bassist Reggie Workman. Dolphy plays bass clarinet on India and alto sax on Impressions (final chord only), while Workman appears on India alongside Garrison. Drummer Roy Haynes replaces Jones in studio on After the rain. A fifth piece, Dear old Stockholm, recorded on the same day as After the rain, was not included on the original LP but appeared on later reissues.
